A New Kind of Trees Growing on the Riverbed, Las Vegas | ||
Along the banks of natural waterways one often finds trees growing, fed by a reliable supply of moisture and nutrients. The flood-controlled, carefully guided one seen in this picture has a different kind of "trees" lining its banks, however: No unruly growth is allowed here, these boles carry electricity to feed the urban sprawl adjoining its course. Speaking of flood control, it's interesting to note a couple of the bridges in the foreground: The one going from upper right toward the lower left is carrying the river OVER the road that now occupies its old bed, and is the deepest part of the river in view. The bridges going from the dams just upstream from that bridge toward the lower right corner of the picture are part of the flood control system, carrying excess runoff away where it can dissipate harmlessly. |
