If it weren't for lichen and moss such as these, the Earth would be a barren rock as it seems so many other planets and planetoids are.

We can either eat something that is or was alive, or we can eat rocks. Personally, I'll leave mos of the rock eating to "guys" such as these. (Table salt - sodium chloride - is a notable exception - but generally we don't EAT salt...)
