After the Retsof salt mine collapse on March 12, 1994 drained the local aquifers, Akzo constructed the pond visible off end of the wing, approximately in the center of the picture. For a while, the water was a good supply for the farm, when crops were grown in the fields above it. When the uphill neighbors changed to intensive dairy farming and spreading manure on the field, however, the water quality changed. The shape of the field and the narrow neck of land between the gullies acting as a funnel effectively poured sewage into the drinking water supply. Once the problem was brought to their attention, the neighbors moved their manure spreading to other fields, but the water has never been the same since.
